Upstate South Carolina Best Places To Live Living In GreenvilleSo what’s so great about living in Upstate South Carolina best places?  And in particular the best place to live of Greenville?

Greenville SC is more urban and cosmopolitan compared to a lot of other Upstate South Carolina best places.  And to be perfectly honest, even North Carolina Mountain best places to live.

It has not only the incredible natural beauty of its southern Appalachian environs but also a pleasant climate.

I’ll say it again….a pleasant climate yet still it has beautiful vistas!

Seriously if you love being just minutes away from the mountains and all that has to offer in regards to outdoor activities you really need to check out Greenville South Carolina.

Having said that, there is still more to moving to a place just because we like the views.  Let’s be honest.  It wouldn’t be in our best interest to move to an area that was not strong economically.  And having a strong economy doesn’t mean it isn’t affordable.

We’ve been exploring cities in North Carolina and South Carolina that made the Forbes’ List of 200 Best Small Cities, or the 200 Best Big Cities for Business and Careers.

And we all know how important business and careers are in impacting our quality of life.

Wait…..before we go any further, I forgot to mention the 400 cities listed were throughout the United States.  Not just North Carolina and South Carolina.

Okay let’s get back to the beautiful Upstate South Carolina best places to live of Greenville.

Sitting just above the middle of the pack, Greenville South Carolina ranks #76 Overall for business and careers.

And if that isn’t enough, this isn’t the first time this Upstate South Carolina best places to live has been on Forbes’ radar.  Not too long ago, Greenville made it on the Top 5 list of Best Places to Retire.

At this point I’m sure you’ve guessed this isn’t my first trip to Upstate Greenville South Carolina. And for sure it won’t be my last.

There are so many wonderful things about this small city.  And, it seems each time I’m here there is something new.  And another reason Greenville continues to make it onto my list of Upstate South Carolina best places to live.

Needless to say, I’m thrilled to be back again.

Greenville has a population of about about 60,709,and is in Greenville County.  The entire county has a population of 467,605.

Greenville is the ideal location for someone who loves the mountains and 4 seasons.  But for those of us who don’t want to live in the middle of the snow, like you commonly find in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Greenville is only about an hour away from the North Carolina Mountain best place to live of Asheville.  so you aren’t too far from snowy areas, when you want to see it.

The overall rating is calculated by also taking a look at the city in terms of job growth, education, and the cost of doing business.

We’re diving into these areas and what they mean.  And if Greenville and Upstate South Carolina should make it onto your short list.

On the job growth front, Greenville ranks at #104, which is pretty much in the middle of the list.

The major industries in the Greenville area are technology and financial services.

The unemployment rate is lower than the national average at 6.5%.  And 2012 brought a 1.4% increase in jobs.  The annual projected job growth rate of % indicates the area is growing, and more people will find jobs soon.

Greenville’s major employers are:

  • Greenville Hospital System – 10,925
  • School District of Greenville County – 10,850
  • Michelin North America, Inc. – 4,000
  • G.E. Energy – 3,200
  • SC State Government – 3,036

Many companies have regional headquarters in Upstate South Carolina, including:

  • Ameco
  • Charter Communications
  • General Electric
  • Hubbell Lighting
  • Michelin
  • TD Bank
  • Verizon Wireless

The cost of living is 3.3% lower than the national average, which though it may not seem like much, can make a place much more affordable overall.

The median household income is $43,406. The median home price is $151,100. This is a highly affordable best place to live compared to many other cities and towns in the country.  And quite a few in North Carolina and South Carolina.

As far as education is concerned, Greenville ranks at #119, which again is near the middle of the pack.  While there is always room for improvement, Greenville is doing better than other cities on the list.

85.1% of the residents have at least a high school diploma. 26.9% of residents have a college education, and 9.1% have a graduate degree. This is a high proportion of graduate level education compared to many other best places on our list.

  • University of SC-Spartanburg

In terms of the cost of doing business in the area, Greenville comes in at #59. This is a great indication the area is growing!

It also means people who want to run their own small businesses in Greenville could do well, compared to other areas in the country. This is excellent if you want to own and operate a small business when you relocate, or are considering starting one to supplement your retirement income.

On average, there are 221 sunny days a year in part of Upstate South Carolina.  I personally love that!

The average July temperature is 86.8, and the average January temperature is 31.2 degrees. Annually, you’ll see an average of about 52.8 inches of rain per year, compared to only 3.2 inches of snow per year.

Greenville is the perfect Upstate South Carolina best places to live for many people. It’s not too hot, not too cold. It’s surrounded by beautiful scenery and there’s plenty of things to do.
