Balsam Mountain Preserve
Balsam Mountain Preserve is located on the edges of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, just about 10 miles from Waynesville, NC and 6 from Sylva, NC .
Both Waynesville and Sylva have charming downtowns and plenty to entertain you, but you may not want to leave the community.
You'll enjoy tennis courts, hiking and biking trails, fly fishing in 38 miles of streams, a Junior Olympic pool, equestrian facilities, a fitness center with trainers, a steam room and sauna, and a dining hall with a restaurant, lounge, library and a bar.
The best part of Balsam Mountain Preserve is its commitment to the North Carolina land.
A large portion of the community lands are set aside as a nature preserve, which the residents are allowed to explore.
There are two campgrounds set up, one with rustic cottages, and the other with a pavilion and hot showers.
There is also a recycling center and a community garden, where you can rub shoulder with your neighbors and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
During the year there are lectures and classes, many focusing on the nature of the area, as well as an artist in residence program.
Balsam Mountain Preserve really has it all, and sets the bar for other North Carolina mountain communities.
