Spartanburg, SC Video Transcript
Today we are visiting Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Spartanburg is Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the northwest corner of South Carolina and is sometimes referred to “Upstate.”
Spartanburg is located on the Route 85 which is also known as the “Growth Corridor” which runs between Greensboro, North Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia.
Greenville is about 20 minutes west of Spartanburg, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina is about an hour and a half drive to the east. And Hendersonville, North Carolina is 40 minutes north.
The population of Spartanburg South Carolina is roughly 40,000 and Spartanburg County has approximately 260,000 people.
The Center of Spartanburg’s downtown district is known as triangular shaped Morgan Square. Placed within 20 ft of the geographical center of Spartanburg is a statue of Revolutionary War Hero General Daniel Morgan which was originally erected in 1881.
Also in Morgan Square is a stunning, stylish Renaissance Park Marriott Hotel.
The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful park, local artist sculptures, fountains and sitting areas.
Spartanburg was recently named as one of the 31 founding cities of the Playful City USA initiative for its long-range goal accomplishments of parks and recreation.
The Hub City Art Park, across from the hotel is where local artists exhibit their sculptures and provide a focal point and gathering place for residents.
The Chapman Cultural Center which hosts a wide range of events including art exhibits, concerts, plays and movies is committed to being common ground where residents and visitors can come together to discover, experience and celebrate the arts.
It’s evident there’s a conscious effort into making downtown Spartanburg a place where people will enjoy coming to shop, relax, enjoy the arts and meet friends to dine.
The downtown area is filled with beautiful old historic buildings that have been well-preserved and are absolutely quaint and have that small town southern charm.
Visitors, like residents, find restaurants catering to everyone’s tastes and price range. From classic southern cooking to international cuisine to outdoor dining and music at Wild Wings.
Within a 15 minute walk, there is Wofford College, Congress College and Spartanburg Community College, 3 cultural centers, public parks, recreational trails and over 20 sculptures and fountains.
Barnett Park in particular bordering the downtown area, serves as a delightful watering hole for the kids in the heat of the summer, a place to walk among nature or just sit on a quiet afternoon. The Zimmerli Amphitheater is located in the park and holds numerous outdoor events
Recognized with the 2008 Best of the South Award by the Southeast Chapter Society of Architectural Historians, the Hampton Heights Historic District which borders downtown Spartanburg project was noted as “innovative” for its “community focus and emphasis on urban revitalization.” It is a collection of 120 houses that retain their historic and architectural character from the early period of 1910-1930. You’ll find classic styles as Queen Anne, Bungalow and Craftsman.
As you leave the Historic District, you’ll find tree lined streets with beautiful, well kept houses typical of the Spartanburg area. The median home price in Spartanburg is $110,000. The median home price for South Carolina is approximately $135,000.
