Elizabeth City, North Carolina
Elizabeth City sits between the Outer Banks on the North Carolina coastline and southeastern Virginia, at the point where the Pasquotank River widens on its way to the Albemarle Sound.
Elizabeth City first gained prosperity in 1805 when the Dismal Swamp Canal was finished, providing economic viability to the area.
The Canal still serves Elizabeth City's economy, bringing many pleasure and business ships through the area on their way to the Intracoastal Waterway.
Elizabeth City NC has received praise from the likes of Money Magazine, who named the city one of the Best Places to Live on the Mid-Atlantic Coast in its June 2004 edition.
The water isn't the only way to get in and out of coastal Elizabeth City. Route 158 connects the City inland to the west and to the North Carolina Outer Banks to the east. Route 17 runs to points north, connecting Elizabeth City to Virginia.
Kitty Hawk North Carolina is about an hour and fifteen minutes east. The Virginia cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk and Suffolk are about an hour to the north, and Greenville NC and the mainland are about two hours to the west.
Elizabeth City, North Carolina has a population of about 20,437 people, which accounts for almost half of Pasquotank County's total population of 41,578 people.
