You might be surprised how cities, big and small, ranked in North Carolina and South Carolina.

And just to be clear, not all best places to live in NC and SC, big and small cities were ranked.  So if an area you’re considering isn’t on the list….don’t worry.

So let’s talk about best places to live in NC and SC for Business and Careers in 2013.

Although we see some relief in the unemployment statistics being published, some of the decrease in the rate is due to more and more Americans just giving up looking for a job.

Chances are you know at least one person unemployed when they would prefer to be working.

The “Recovery” has been anemic at best.  Regardless of all the political hype in the news.

However, there are best places to live in NC and SC with strong business climates.  Best places to live in NC and SC that are showing real growth and bright futures.

Once again, it’s no surprise that North Carolina and South Carolina made it onto the Forbes’ list of Best Places to live for Business and Careers in 2013.

And it isn’t the first time Best Places To Live In NC and SC have made it onto the list.  This is the 15th annual list. Back in 2009 I wrote about it.  It’s interesting to see what best places to live in NC and SC are still on the list.

A total of 12 metrics were used to compile the list of Best Places to live.  All 12 metrics related to job growth.

  • past and projected
  • costs (business and living)
  • income growth over the past five years
  • educational attainment (college and high school)
  • projected economic growth through 2014
  • migration patterns
  • cultural and recreational opportunities
  • number of highly ranked colleges in an area

The two areas receiving the most weighting in the overall ranking were business costs and educational attainment.   If you are familiar with the Forbes annual report you’ll notice they dropped crime rates and added high school attainment.

For most of us looking for our best places to live in North Carolina and South Carolina, we’ve made a point of researching crime rates.  Who doesn’t want lower crime?

I know you may say…

“Bob I don’t really care about the educated work force in the area!” 

But wait just a minute and consider this.

Jerry Szatan, a site selection consultant based in Chicago says;

“Quality of life often is overemphasized compared to operating costs and conditions,Education measures are always good. One of the fundamental building blocks in economic development is smart people. ”

2013 Best places were ranked based on three factors:

  • Cost of doing business
  • Job growth
  • Educated work force

Forbes further complied two lists…

  • The Best Large Cities for Business and Careers and
  • The Best Small Cities for Business and Careers

Each list contained 200 Best Places in the United States.

Below are the best places to live in NC and SC as noted on the Forbes list for the Best Large Cities.  Remember these Best Places are just the North Carolina and South Carolina Best Large cities that were ranked.
