As you know, my best place to live is Asheville NC (which we’ll be visiting soon.) But I have to tell you that my wife and I also really love the Charleston area. And considered it as our second choice.

One of the things I will say about living close to the ocean, and maybe you’ve heard it before, but real estate prices are  much higher on a small barrier island.

Start Your Life In Coastal SC In The Right Place

Not only being close to the water is much in demand but the fact is there simply is not a lot of space.

Especially in comparison to that of a small town out in the country.

I know that one of the main reasons we talk about looking for smaller communities. cities and towns outside larger metropolitan areas is that you can definitely save some money cost of living wise.

However, I’ll be the first to admit some of the SC best beaches to live small communities, in this instance, we’re going to explore actually might cost you a lot more.

Of course expensive is relative and depends on what you want. And some of you might be looking for SC best beaches to live that is more exclusive.

And while expensive, actually might be relatively less expensive than a similar community closer to where you’re coming from.

Whew, that was a mouthful, I trust you get what I’m saying. Because today we’re going to look at a couple of fairly exclusive SC best beaches to live island communities.

Coastal South Carolina Best Places To LiveThe first community while only a bit over 25 miles south of Charleston may take you about an hour to drive there.

So, lets get going to the gated island community of Seabrook Island SC.

Yes, Seabrook Island is a private planned island community.

And is one of the most beautiful spots you’ll find on the South Carolina coast. Definitely should be on your list of SC best beaches to live.

Not only do you have a wonderful beach but the marshlands are stunning. And the local homeowners association has done much to preserve the surrounding natural beauty of the island.

For those who love the outdoors, there are miles of trails cutting through the natural flora and fauna and deep water.

There is also a club with health and fitness facilities. As well as tennis and racquetball, two amazing championship grade golf courses and a large equestrian center for you horse lovers.

In fact, Seabrook Island is probably one of the few places on the South Carolina or North Carolina coast that you’ll see people riding horses on the beaches.

While pricier than many SC best beaches to live communities in this area, I think you’ll find that there is a lot of variety. To the local housing market from the small villa to a large oceanfront home with all the accoutrements.

The people I’ve met from Seabrook enjoy the quiet and restful feel of the community. Especially those seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle minutes away in Charleston.

And remember one of the benefits of a community is there is always a lot going on. Including clubs and organizations that allow you to spend a little time with your neighbors.

And there are nice shops and fine award winning restaurants as well on Seabrook Island.

The median home value isn’t all that out of line with some of the other beach communities we’ve looked at so far. And again for some of you, is less expensive than the housing median where you currently live.

Coastal South Carolina Best Places To LiveOur second stop to SC Best Beaches is literally right next door to Seabrook Island and was recently chosen as one of “America’s Happiest Seaside Towns.

The SC best beaches to live coastal town of Kiawah Island population 1,626.

Kiawah Island, like Seabrook Island, has done a lot to preserve its very unique natural beauty.

The community has incorporated itself into its lifestyle in general.

For instance, Night Heron Park is a fantastic place to relax, take in a concert or have fun at one of the many community family nights.

Residents can take in canoeing or kayaking in the salt marshes. And many are actively involved in programs to help local wildlife like the endangered Loggerhead Turtles that nest on the island.

Overall, people here are friendly and laid back. Yet take an active interest in maintaining their special community.  The local housing market has something for just about anyone. From single-family cottages to impressive oceanfront villas.

The local regulation of development does a good job at the balance between the islands great natural beauty and new development.

One of my favorite places in this community is Fresh fields Village. With its many retail stores and restaurants that also sponsors events like “movies under the stars” or an outdoor concert series. And a really wonderful Farmers Market every summer.

With produce from nearby Johns Island as well as a wide variety of local arts and crafts thrown in for good measure.

Okay, I could go on and on about Kiawah Island but let me leave by saying the median home value in this community is going to cost you.

I hope you had fun this week and learned about some great SC Best Beaches to live close to Charleston SC .

Don’t miss the other SC best beaches to live we’ve explored…

I’ll see you next week to see where we end up next because I don’t know myself!

Take care and have the best week!
