Fayetteville, NC…Good News, Bad News
Not everything is rosy in the Carolinas.
And I always give you both sides of the story!
Due to the economic downturn and housing crisis, many areas of the country have experienced a glut of unsold empty houses, a decrease in jobs, and an increase in crime.
Several of my subscribers have written me recently describing dismal conditions in Fayetteville, NC.
I'm reprinting one such email here:
Fayetteville?? Really?? Someone, somewhere is getting a kickback for some of these postings:)
I've lived in Fayetteville for the last eight years as a soldier and as a civilian. Sadly, I've seen it slowly slip into a dump.
There aren't enough officers to patrol the streets, and non-violent crime is increasing steadily every year.
The police department can't even keep their crime-data software up to date because of all the activity!
I've been broken into twice since I've lived here!
On a brighter note, the city is adding 35 more patrol officers on the streets.
We'll see what the effect this has.
This is the unfortunate cold, hard reality.
If you want to live in a safe, clean, pleasant area with good schools, you're going to pay for it. Why do you think rich white neighborhoods have such low crime rates (generally speaking)? When I move to a new area, I want to be around people I can relate to and befriend.
Race has never been an issue in my life UNTIL I moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina. I can't believe how many times I've been discriminated against or slandered simply because I'm white!
With half the population consisting of Black/Hispanic/Native Americans, it's makes for an interesting time. If you're thinking of relocating to Fayetteville, I would put in some diligent research into it.
If you're a soldier moving to Fayetteville, I would find four or five of your buddies and rent a nice house in a safe area. Problem solved.
You have a family? Stay on post!! Living on post isn't that safe anymore either, but it's better than most areas. I guess I'm spinning my wheels here. It all comes down to what you can afford. Money, in most cases, equates to good living.
I truly thank this person for their honesty, and taking the time to write me!
They are absolutely correct…You MUST diligently research the places you are considering to relocate or retire to in the Carolinas, to find the best place for YOU to live.
Each of us have our own needs we must consider when relocating or retiring to the Carolinas.
Fayetteville, North Carolina is one of those interesting places that sits out on its own, but is close enough to many other towns.
It has a population of approximately 120,000 and Fort Bragg, the Army base, is located there. The Fayetteville "metropolitan area" has a population of approximately 340,000. So there must be some good things about the Fayetteville area for all those people to be living there.
Southern Pines is to the west (60 miles), Raleigh, NC is north (60 miles), Goldsboro, NC is east (68 miles), and Wilmington, NC is pretty far south (about 90 miles).
Based on how the area has developed and its geographic location, you don't have to go too far outside Fayetteville proper to be in a rural countrified setting.
The cost of living is below average and so is the cost of housing, two very important considerations for people who would like to retire in North Carolina "affordably".
The climate is temperate, which is another big consideration of people looking for their best place to live in North Carolina.
In 2008, Best Life magazine ranked Fayetteville as the third worst city in America to raise a family!
In 2010, Where To Retire magazine featured Fayetteville as one of the "5 Star Towns for Military Retirementt", and named it as one of the best places to retire.
As with everything, there's some good points, and not so good points.
As I said previously, You MUST diligently research the places you are considering to relocate or retire to in the Carolinas, to find the best place for YOU to live.
Which means actually going there and spending time there talking to people who live there!
Each of us have our own needs we must consider when relocating or retiring to the Carolinas.
