Last week we had fun exploring the North Carolina Coast best place to live of Wilmington.

So, I thought this week we’d look at South Carolina Coast Best Places To Live.

And one in particular got my attention.

Southern plantations overflowing with low country charm and proper manners with an awful lot of history to boot.

Yes, we’re talking about the South Carolina Coast best places to live of Charleston.

One of my favorite best places to live in the Carolinas.

When most of us think of Charleston SC we picture this unique little city of the Old South.

Charleston is still all that.  But as you’ll soon see there’s a lot more to South Carolina Coast best places to live than meets the eye.

Start Your Life In Coastal SC In The Right Place

As I did last week with Wilmington NC,  I thought we’d take a look at some of the things people are telling me they like and dislike about Charleston SC.

But before we get to that, I have to ask you a question…..

Is the South Carolina Coast best places to live of Charleston really a Top Ten city?

Alright, here goes with the likes:

  • Lots of things to do and places to see: There’s a reason that Charleston SC has been a long time Conde Nast Traveler Top 10 travel destination in the US..
  • Charleston’s is close to all types of outdoor excitement. Including golf, beaches, sailing and anything else you can imagine.
  • You’ll find a great restaurants and lot of museums and cultural attractions to take in. The annual Spoleto Festival is one of the biggest music festivals in the U.S..  Attracting tens of thousands of people to this South Carolina Coast best places to live every May and June.
  • Great healthcare and education opportunities: Ranked in the top 25 high schools in the nation.  Charleston SC has a number of highly ranked universities and institutions of higher learning.  And its public school system does very well in South Carolina state rankings.
  • Parents with younger children will like the variety of educational opportunities.  Be they public, private, charter or magnet schools.  Not only are some of the best high schools in South Carolina found in Charleston, but one even ranked in the top 25 high schools in the nation in a recent Newsweek magazine.
  • Those worried about finding quality medical care should know that there are several well-respected medical care facilities. Including the Medical University of South Carolina located in Charleston.
  • Diverse economy and career prospects:  This South Carolina Coast best places to live has come a long way.  From a local economy dominated by its container port and military facilities to one welcoming an increasing number of high-tech and future oriented businesses.
  • One of the city’s biggest recent business coup is a new plant to build Boeing 787 airplanes.  Local unemployment is lower than the South Carolina state average.
  • A great business climate with low taxes and an entrepreneurial culture has pulled younger workers looking to either start new careers or take the next step in their current career paths.



We’ve been through the likes, now how about the dislikes?

Up front I want to say that many of these are familiar and common to just about any big city but they bear mentioning.

  • Expensive: This I would say is relative as you’ll find that Charleston SC is at the national average for cost of living.  But you’ll also find that compared to a lot of South Carolina Coast best places to live that housing is more expensive in the Charleston area.
  • That’s not to say there aren’t smaller communities around with better deals, but if you want to live near downtown, expect to pay several hundreds of thousands of dollars if not in the millions.
  • Crime: Charleston SC has a crime rate that has fallen over the last decade.  But is still above the national average.  Property crimes make up the majority of crime in the Charleston area.
  • Traffic: Rush hour traffic on I-26 is notoriously bad.  Some have made note of the fact that a number of area roads need to be expanded or upgraded to truly handle the amount of traffic.  Especially with the increasing number of people  relocating and retiring there.
  • Hurricanes: The list of dislikes or concerns would not be complete if we didn’t mention the possibility of hurricanes.
  • Along with South Carolina Coast best places to live comes the threat each May through November of experiencing a hurricane.
  • Nothing to take lightly if you choose a South Carolina Coast best places to live. Make sure to do your homework. And have the proper insurance and clearly understand what it means to live in a flood zone.
