New Retirement Living
I'm sure you’ve heard the term “60 is the new 40” so I doubt you’ll be surprised when I tell you that retirement has changed in pretty fundamental ways.
Retirement used to be thought of as a time of leisure with few plans beyond collecting that company gold watch and spending those golden years traveling or hitting the links.
This commonly held ideal of retirement living is still with us, but millions and millions of retirees and soon to be retirees are looking not for the end of something but the start of something new; a new phase of living in a continually productive life, a time for rediscovery and enjoying new things.
Today’s retirees are living longer, working longer and are staying active longer. In fact, people who study retirees have divided them up into several different life models of which only one holds to our classic ideal of retirement living.
So many of the people I talk to who are looking to retire to South Carolina or North Carolina want to live where they can continue to do the things they love while also finding new things to do.
They want to meet new people and find their best place to live that also has all types of activities to participate in.
So this week I thought we’d look at “New Retirement Living” and no matter what age you are, encourage you to look at our New Retirement section so you can explore “7 Steps to Creating a Fulfilling Retirement”.
I think you’ll agree that more and more people are looking at this new phase of their lives not as a time to sit back but as a time for activity, connection and purpose.
Let’s take a look at three main aspects of New Retirement Living.
Living Longer: In general, people are living longer and are in better health than previous generations of retirees. Studies tell us that enjoying and maintaining good health as you age definitely adds to the happiness and fulfillment you’ll experience in retirement.
Investing in healthier habits from eating better to getting enough sleep and exercise definitely pay dividends and today’s retirees are hitting the gyms, watching their diets and doing all the little things that will allow them to continue pursuing all the things they love to do.
Working Longer: While most of us wouldn’t hesitate to take that gold watch and run, for some that financially isn’t an option while others can’t imagine not continuing their professional lives into retirement. In either case, for today’s retirees it’s perfectly acceptable and I dare say healthier to continue to work even if only in a limited capacity.
Working in retirement helps you to maintain the lifestyle you wish to have and provides a vehicle for keeping both mind and body active.
Moreover, surveys of both the private and public sectors show they worry about the loss of knowledge and experience held by retirees and won’t hesitate to tap into that experience when needed.
Staying Active Longer: A balanced life even in retirement means getting out of the house and doing things be it with your spouse or a group of friends and today’s retirees are much more active then their parents were at this point in their lives.
If you don’t believe me, take a look at the large number of active adult retirement communities in our North Carolina and South Carolina Communities Directories!
Not only are retirees more physically active, but they’re much more likely to volunteer or seek involvement with local community groups and also more likely to seek out things to stay mentally active like Lifelong Learning Centers, cultural events and so forth.
Just remember, seeking out new things doesn’t end when you leave school and it sure doesn’t have to end when you retire.
So, regardless of what stage of life you are in, while you are considering moving to North Carolina or South Carolina, make sure your decision is to the best place for you to live. Not only for now but in the years to come.
