Like you, I always tell people to spend some time in an area before making a decision to relocate there. Even rent before they buy. While some options seem fantastic on paper things are not always as they seem. If possible you should check out the area before hand, possibly stay a week or so if you are looking to relocate. Also always remember that what works for some might not work for all... and that the internet is a wealth of information, see if you can find personal accounts on events and establishments.
