Wow, how fast things change. Because Forbes magazine just listed Rocky Mount, NC on the top 10 most impoverished areas in the NATION!

Fayetteville?? Really?? Someone, somewhere is getting a kickback for some of these postings:) I've lived in Fayetteville for the last eight years as a soldier and as a civilian. Sadly, I've seen it slowly slip into a dump. There aren't enough officers to patrol the streets, and non-violent crime is increasing steadily every year. The police department can't even keep their crime-data software up to date because of all the activity! I've been broken into twice since I've lived here! On a brighter note, the city is adding 35 more patrol officers on the streets. We'll see what the effect this has.
This is the unfortunate cold, hard reality. If you want to live in a safe, clean, pleasant area with good schools, you're going to pay for it. Why do you think rich white neighborhoods have such low crime rates (generally speaking)? When I move to a new area, I want to be around people I can relate to and befriend. Race has never been an issue in my life UNTIL I moved to Fayetteville. I can't believe how many times I've been discriminated against or slandered simply because I'm white! With half the population consisting of Black/Hispanic/Native Americans, it's makes for an interesting time. If you're thinking of relocating to Fayetteville, I would put in some diligent research into it.
If you're a soldier moving to Fayetteville, I would find four or five of your buddies and rent a nice house in a safe area. Problem solved. You have a family? Stay on post!! Living on post isn't that safe anymore either, but it's better than most areas. I guess I'm spinning my wheels here. It all comes down to what you can afford. Money, in most cases, equates to good living.
Bob @ 9:11 am
Yes, things have changed in Fayetteville, due to the prolonged economic downturn!
However, no one is "getting a kickback" as you mention above.
We have waited for the new 2010 Census, so we can update everything at once.
I feel your last sentence above sums it up very well…it all comes down to what you can afford!
There are still some redeeming qualities about the Fayetteville area, and depending on your budget,
it is a very affordable area!
Thanks for your feedback,
Bob

I think we really need to hear more from the actual people that live in the "Best" places to live. We are thinking of relocating to warmer climate, and a lot of info. does not seem accurate. I want to REALLY know where somewhere nice and safe is to live in North or South Carolina. I prefer a small quaint town, with small family owned businesses. A place with nice parks and that you can walk around and feel very safe. I don't want to live in the country, I would love a city/town with a lot of family neighborhoods. I have read a lot of reports on "Best" places to live, and there always seems to be actual people that have lived there downing them.
Thanks

So I'm thinking about moving to NC or SC. Looking for the perfect place. Not a lot of crime/ safe location. Friendly environment. Plenty of stuff to do and places to go. Some places/things of entertainment ( comedy clubs, theater, arena, bands, sports, ect). Great restaurants and coffee shops. Maybe a few bars/clubs. Not too high cost of living. Not too big or not too small of a city. Average age of ppl say about 30. Thanks for your input!
Sarah @ 6:32 pm
Don't move to Wilmington NC, cost of living is high and there is nothing to do for entertainment when it's not summer and beach weather.
Lisa @ 11:07 pm
I am an African American single female with children, and I am thinking about moving to North Carolina. Looking for somewhere that is beautiful, cost of living and crime rate is low, a place where jobs are plentiful (Criminal Justice , Social or Human Service field), where bus or train transportation is near, shopping is close-by and the school districts are 5 stars (Children will be in Jr. High and High School.)
Jena Rowell @ 10:02 pm
HI Lisa……..if you are considering a move…try out Houston TX. Many areas are nice. Cost of living is very good. Jobs are pretty plentiful but the best part about it is the people. There is not any racial strife here either. I love it which I relocated here 30 years ago. Texas is now my home but I also love NC too for sentimental reasons. Good luck in finding your new home. ps you can rent in Houston very very reasonably…..ie 2/2 condo with garage is only about $650 a month. Great places to live are here if you are still wanting to relocate.
pam @ 8:30 pm
I have found a good website to check on statistics. http://www.homefacts.com, gives stats on crime, schools etc. I'm hoping it's accurate. I'm also looking for a safe place to move my daughter, who is coming south from Vt, probably one of the safest places in America. She just can't take the winters. Good luck to all
Bob @ 7:35 am
Hi Pam,
Thanks so much for letting all of us know about homefacts.com.

Gina @ 5:52 pm
I've lived in Spartanburg, SC for years and I hardly think it is one of the best places to live. There is very little to do, aside from going out to eat (and there aren't that many places to eat out), going to the mall (which isn't a very nice mall), or going to the movies (which is too expensive to do regularly). The people here are highly uneducated and unmotivated, which honestly, is a make or break deal for me. Not to mention the schools around here… HA. I know students from all of the high schools in Spartanburg and attended one myself, and even the education offered from the largest, wealthiest district was not to the point where it should be. Even the universities are not where they should be (they are incredibly expensive despite the fact that they let everyone in, and because they let everybody in, the classes are dumbed down).
I've been stuck here for years underneath my parents' roof, but I'm leaving and not coming back when I graduate from university. Anybody who's thinking of moving here… don't.
Bob @ 11:22 am
Gina,
I really appreciate you sharing your view of Spartanburg with us.
We like to give our subscribers a balanced view of things!
As with anything…books, restaurants, movies, best places, each
person has a different view, and it also all depends on the stage
at which you are in your life and what you're looking to get out of
it at that time.
Are there other towns in the area you feel are better?
Thanks,
Bob
carolyn @ 7:52 am
Please tell me where the picture was taken in this ad…love the city by the water!!……is it South Carolina or North Carolina ? I love this town!!
Thanks,
Carolyn
Bob @ 8:06 am
The town is Georgetown, just northeast of Charleston.

@Tara:
Hi Tara…I know your message was sent long ago, but I wanted to reply just in case. We moved to Matthews NC from Gilbert AZ about 4 years ago and LOVE it. This town is exactly what you describe. There is a small town feel, but right next to Charlotte and diversity. There are some quaint family run establishments, as well as major chains. The neighborhoods are clean and well kept. My husband is a police officer here and it is a far cry from the rat race that Phoenix AZ was….he worked in Phoenix. The population is approx 25,000…so just right. We are raising our family here and it has been a very good choice for us.
CPrice @ 9:23 pm
I am writing to find out about how I can choose the best place to live in the Carolina. I was wondering if one particular county or area was more prone to hurricane's then the other. Also I wanted to know is raccoon's and other animals a real problem out in the country. Thank you for any information you can provide.
sonya @ 6:01 pm
hello my name is sonya i live in fl but thinking about moving to NC can anybody tell me where is the best place to live
RCutt @ 3:02 pm
My husband and I are thinking about making a move with our younger children. Moving from the Midwest and use to hot summers and humidity to freezing cold and snowy winters. My husband is not fond of hurricanes but really hasn't ever visited NC. Really looking for somewhere that has moderate temps throughout the year, things to do in towns close by, GREAT school system for our children and nothing that will have a really high cost of living……any suggestions??
Bob @ 11:09 am
There are quite a number of areas in the Carolinas to fit what you've described.
South Carolina will give you the most moderate temps, but it will get hot in the Summer!
There are also a number of places in North Carolina that will give you three seasons rather than the cold snowy winters
of the Midwest.
Get a copy of my "Ultimate Guide", and then let's pinpoint some places together.

Relocating to the Charleston area, is Summerville a safe family friendly place to live and how are the public schools? Any insight and suggestions would be appreciated.. What other areas should i be considering in the Charleston area?
Thank You
Bob @ 9:18 am
Hi Chris,
I feel Summerville is a great way to live in an area that is way more affordable
than Charleston, but still take advantage of all that Charlesto and the beach areas have
to offer!

Ashley @ 10:35 am
I am looking to move to NC from NJ. I have been to Charlotte, but have heard great things about Raleigh and Wilmington as well. Now I view these areas (charlotte and raleigh) as city areas, and were looking for land. We would like to be able to have some acerage for our horses and dogs. My husband is in building supply and I am in the medical field as an office manager. We would, most likely need to be near a city due to our jobs, but we are looking for a low-key town, or suburb of a city. Any Ideas/ suggestions???
Thank you,
Ashley
Bob @ 9:08 am
Hi Ashley,
I love the areas outside Charlotte because you can get the land
you want, and still be close enough to take advantage of the City for jobs, nightlife, etc.
The areas near Lake Norman are really nice…just north of Charlotte.
Places like Cornelius, Huntersville, Mooresville, Kannapolis, and Salisbury.

Taneah @ 3:34 pm
Living in houston now and soo ready to leave. Ive really been leaning toward northcarolina Can you tell me the best places to live similar to the katy area here in texas
Julie @ 12:52 pm
My mother and I have been talking about moving to North Carolina lately. We currently live in Pennsylvania and we're both just tired of the long, cold winters. NC seems like the best bet. We're not big on huge cities, but the idea of living in a tiny town with nothing around isn't appealing either. So something in between would be nice…. A nice neighborhood, where you can take a 30-45 minute drive to bars, clubs, malls, restaraunts, etc. We also wouldn't want to live too close to the coast… Maybe about a 2 – 3 hour drive from the beach. If anyone has any recommendations for an area like that, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Julie
Bob @ 11:59 am
Hi Taneah,
Unless you describe the Katy area of Texas, I don't know
what areas of the Carolinas would be similar for you.
Why do you want to leave that area?
Bob

Sydnay @ 10:05 pm
My family and I are looking to possibly move to NC. We currently live in the upper midwest with long, cold winters, warm, humid summers. We want to move somewhere that has moderate temperatures all year, humidity is not a problem. We have thought about Wilmington but the more we read into it the more bad things we hear about it. Is Wilmington really that bad? What is a good city that is close to the ocean and has around 100,000 people?
samiyah @ 11:36 am
My name is Samiyah and I want to relocate to either NC, or SC. I have 2 little girls and I need to know where the best elementary schools are, good entertainment ,jobs, and things to do in the summer.. If anyone have information plese let me no.. I was thinking about Spartanburg ,Sc but not sure.
